sooo....only one day left in my first week of grad school. here are some things i have learned:
*even the toughest, thuggiest-looking guys on the south side of chicago cannot help but be polite to a little white girl on an old blue bicycle, should aforementioned girl simply smile at them on her way by.
*this leads the girl to be happier, therefore smiling at more strangers, causing them to be polite, etc. etc.
*gangs of smaller birds will, in fact, gang up on a giant pigeon and force him to drop the french fry he was eating.
*bunnies can, and will, get under the couch and chew on your phone cord if given the chance. even if you repeatedly try new things to keep them from getting under there.
*thus, rabbits are smarter than people.
*my siblings are the most adorable things ever. EVER.
*should you make a big deposit, say the stipend check on which you were planning to live for the next several months, to your checking account, the bank may take up to 5 business days to process it. leaving you unable to purchase absolutely anything. even groceries.
*mike, if left to his own devices, would eat boca burgers every day until he died.
*i am a much better, creative cook than i thought.
*a spring sticking out of your bike seat that stabs you in the ass makes life, let's say, a bit uncomfortable.
*the human brain produces way more synapses than it needs, then, should you not use them, they die. so use it or lose it!
*my landlord apparently was given a guitar because "well, let's just put it this way, somebody owed [him] some money".
*when you move, it takes a while to make the transition from feeling like a visitor to feeling like a resident. for me, that time period is approximately two months, and it is accompanied by a vague, unnameable-yet-persistent feeling of homesickness which manifests itself as a feeling of disorientation.
*clubs, when trying to recruit new members, often offer very fancy food at their meetings here. go even if you're not interested in joining, because, hey, why not!
