jane addams
i just watched a pbs thingy about jane addams the other day. i thought her story was amazing. a wealthy society lady who decided to do something about poverty. she moved to a poor neighborhood in chicago and tried to teach shakespeare to the residents. of course, they were happy to learn english and learn to read but according to the documentary, they needed more things like food and a place to take a bath. so she provided that too. i don't know a lot about her but she basically invented social work. from what i can tell.
